2025 SA Junior Heifer Expo

The 2025 SA Junior Heifer Expo was a fitting celebration for the youth event, which has had thousands of entrants through its 40 year history.
Over the four days at the Adelaide Showgrounds, 195 entrants (aged 8-24 years) from five states made new friendships and renewed old ones as well as gaining valuable life skills.
The education program included practical sessions such as ringcraft, washing/drying and clipping along with a new addition meat judging, including identifying cuts.
Other popular sessions included signs of sickness with Adelaide Hills based vet Ben Weir and public speaking sessions delivered by Vic Angus breeder Peter Collins to enhance the entrants' junior judging abilities.
Expo assistant coordinator Katelin Davies said the 40th Expo was a "resounding success".
"It was great to have some many influential past competitors and organisers in attendance to celebrate the achievement and see where the event has evolved to today," she said.
More than 20 of the 34 former winners of the senior champion herdsperson award, many who are based interstate, came back for the event.
"Incorporating these former entrants was an added bit of inspiration to the current entrants, especially for them to listen to their journey and realise that they started in almost same position or even more disadvantaged," Mrs Davies said.
She said the focus on education set the SA Expo apart from other beef youth shows across the country, as well as the "great sense of community".
"We couldn't do it without countless volunteers and sponsors too who have skin in the game, whether it is children or a dedication to seeing young people come into agriculture, develop and succeed in the industry," she said.
"People that don't even have children there anymore are still bending over backwards to get there and lend a hand for the week - that is something you don't see in other places."
Handlers judge David Bolton, Congupna, Vic, and his associate Lilli Stewart, Newtown, Vic, who are both former entrants at the event, had a difficult task separating the entrants.
They were impressed with the paraders who were able to remain calm in the ring and position their animals in best spot for the judges to see, but were also looking for those "doing the one percenters".
This included ensuring the animal's ears were clean, the halter was fitting correctly and the animal was well presented, including painting the hooves of black cattle.
In his first Expo, Eddy Tiller, Warnertown, outclassed handlers a couple of years older than him to win the junior champion handler award. Mr Bolton said he was in sync with his Angus heifer and had a great presence.
"The enthusiasm and excitement out of this young fella is infectious - he is only three and a half foot but with this heifer it is almost like he is five foot tall," he said.
The sub intermediate handler award was won by Estee Chase, Dromana, Vic, who Ms Stewart described as a "stand out".
"She has the heifer looking a million bucks and she didn't take her eyes off us, but it was all the little things like stepping her into place before she stopped to stand up, she said.
Another Vic handler Jaydee Grylls, Bayswater North, was given the nod for intermediate champion handler.
Mr Bolton said "everything was perfect".
"She had that head up (of her heifer) all the time and her presentation was immaculate," he said.
Senior champion handler was Olivia Baker, Furner, who will represent SA in the national young beef paraders competition at the upcoming Royal Adelaide Show.
Mr Bolton elevated Olivia to top spot for working well with an "extremely sensitive heifer".
"At the start of the class we weren't sure she would get her stood up but she is so soft with her hands and she got that heifer standing up extremely well," he said.
