Speckle Park steers takes out the double at South Coast Steer Spectacular

A Speckle Park steer has done what not many have before him at the South Coast Beef School Steer Spectacular on May 14, in Nowra.
Originally winning the grand champion steer ribbon on the hoof, Spike, tag B060, exhibited by Boorowa Central School, went on to also win heavy weight champion and the grand champion carcase ribbon.
Recording a dressing percentage of 56.85 per cent and a carcase weight of 263 kilograms, the carcase scored 91.5 points out of a possible 100 against the other 33 entries.
The P8 fat scan was 15 millimetres, while the carcase recorded a rib scan of 7mm, along with an eye muscle area of 78 square centimetres and achieved the highest marbling score of the competition of 4.5 points.
It was also awarded a bronze medal.
Weighing 465kg on the hoof, judges Tony Starr and Zeke Groom, Yass, said the Jad Quistacat Q48 son was the most complete exhibit, with no "holes in him".
The school's success didn't stop there, picking up the champion lightweight and reserve champion carcase sash with a Square Meater steer, tag P151, donated by Su McCluskey, Yass, with an overall score of 91 points.
Rising from the lightweight classes, tag P151 also placed second in his class on the on-hoof, weighing 328kg live.
He recorded a carcase weight of 194kg, with a dressing percentage of 59.39pc, a P8 fat measurement of 11mm and a rib fat scan of 4mm, as well as a EMA of 67cmsq.
The balance of the bronze medals were awarded in the lightweight class, with the runner-up a South Devon with 84.5 points, exhibited by Bomaderry High School and bred by Tannoch South Devons, Gerringong.
Other bronze medals went to Snow Mountains Grammar School with a SimAngus-Limousin composite, bred by Toby and Helen Greenacre, Jaspers Brush, and another Murray Grey from the Boorowa - McClusky combination, both with 84.0 points.
Rounding out the medals was a Limousin, exhibited by Shoalhaven High School and bred by Daren Turner, with 81 points.
Having won two of the hoof and two on-hook classes, and performing well in other categories of the event, Boorowa Central School was awarded Manildra Champion School.
Boorowa Central School agriculture teacher James MacDonald said the team was chuffed with the results.
"The students have put in a big effort with the cattle and we have had great support from a number of breeders," he said.
