A Limousin stud won the major spoils at the Ipswich Show on Saturday, May 17, where there was a larger-than-usual field of 95 entries.

New Day Victory won supreme exhibit and champion bull of the show and Flemington Royal Regae won champion female of the show, both entered by Fernvale Limousins.

The Brisbane Valley operation enjoyed its first major success in stud showing in 2024 when Fernvale Tank took out the grand champion Limousin bull at the Ekka, after previous success in led steer categories.

The increase in entries, up five to ten on previous years, included both more head from previous exhibitors and cattle from new entrants, according to chief steward Shaylee Cooper.

Competition judge Isaac Billau said New Day Victory showed quality across the board, and stood out in areas such as its depth of hindquarter.

"He has good folds and softness in his head for a polled bull," Mr Billau said.

"He's good through that hip to pin, carries his spine straight to his shoulder and onto his neck, and stands on a good set of feet and legs."

Fernvale Limousins principal Ray Zahnow said his 10-month-old prize bull had taken a supplementary grain and hay mix from Bremer Stockfeeds after he was weaned about four months before the show.

He was bred by the New Day stud at Crookwell, NSW, from sire Mandayen King and dam New Day Jelli-Baby.

Mr Zahnow said his female champion had calved out well since he bought her as a heifer from Flemington Limousins in Batlow, NSW, in the foothills of the Southern Alps.

"Flemington Royal Regae had a respiratory disease about eight weeks ago; she kept feeding her calf but she lost about 100 kilograms from not eating," Mr Zahnow said.

"She has recovered well: I weighed her a couple of weeks ago, and she was about 70kg back up.

"We will likely enter both New Day Victory and Flemington Royal Regae in the Ekka now."
