Gateway Wagyu bull dispersal end of an era for Gloucester breeders

The final dispersal of the Gateway Wagyu stud, which recently sold properties near Gloucester and Taree, offered 90 fullblood bulls at Tamworth Regional Livestock Exchange on Wednesday night.

With no reserve on offer, the 90 bulls - all clear of genetic conditions - reached a top of $28,000, twice, and averaged $6144.

Best selling Wagyu bull, an embryo transfer calf, Gateway United U0020 by Arubial United P0342, presented with top one per cent of the breed for marble score at +3.7, fineness at +0.79 and Breeder Feeder Index at $602, the second highest figure of the offering.

Other estimated breeding values included top 10pc for eye muscle area at +8.4.

Equal-priced Gateway United V0135, eight months, also by Arubial United, presented with a top 1pc Self Replacing Index at $398 and top 5pc Breeder Feeder Index at $488 with top 5pc EBVs that included a marble score of +2.8 and fineness percentage of +0.54. His carcase weight EBV of +44 was in the top 25pc for the breed.

Of all the bulls sold, a 100 per cent clearance, 45pc went to Queensland including the top selling lots, with 55pc remaining in NSW.

The top volume bidder, a Queensland buyer, averaged $22,000 for five bulls, paying to a high of $28,000.

Another Queensland volume buyer came away with seven bulls to average $14,000 and up to $24,000 for the top 1pc sire Gateway United V0133, eight months, also by Arubial United from a Gateway G113 dam.

He presented with leading index figures that included $599 for Breeder Feeder, $424 for Self Replacing and top 1pc terminal indexes for both fullblood ($449) and F1 ($399). His top 5pc marble score EBV presented at 3.2 and fineness, in the top 1pc, recorded 0.6.

Selling for $26,000 was Gateway G113 U0049 by Coates Itoshigenami G113 from Sumo Cattle Co Fuku K136, with a marble score of +3.3, fineness +0.51 and carcase weight +39. His top 5pc Breeder Feeder Index came in at $527.

Another United calf from a G113 dam with top 1pc figures was Gateway United V0144, which sold for $22,000 with +3.5 marble score, +0.62 finenesss, a Breeder Feeder Index of $657 - the highest of the draft - and a top 5pc carcase weight figure of +66.

George Lubbe, Premium Bovine Solutions, said it was a strong result.

"In the last month, Gateway Wagyu also offered a line of Fullblood females that met strong demand, with full clearance and continued interest in maternal lines from the same breeding foundation," he said.

The sale was hosted by Premium Bovine Solutions with assistance from Australian Property and Livestock in conjunction with Purtle Plevey Agencies. StockLive handled the online bidding.
