'Complete package' Hampshire Downs young ewe continues winning streak at Sydney

A milk-tooth Hampshire Down ewe, that was the "complete package", has taken the big prize in the judging at the Sydney Royal Easter Show on April 16.

Judge Cherie Pagan, Cooinda Border Leicesters, Gilgandra, praised the ewe from Jurambula stud, Ryan, near Henty, saying Jurambula 24010 had "carried herself beautifully".

"She's a beautiful young ewe, very structurally correct," she said.

"She is a ewe that is going to grow beautifully - the growth in the young ewe so far is phenomenal."

The reserve champion accolade went to another Jurambula ewe from the same milk-tooth shorn class.

Ms Pagan said judging the rams had been "really tricky".

"The young ram is correct and well grown and I know the young ram will grow out beautifully, but I can't go past the older ram on the day," she said.

"The older ram is correct, with good muscling, strength and power."

The champion ram ribbon went to Jurambilla 23011, from the over 1.5-year class, while the reserve champion went to the winner of the shorn, milk-tooth class, also from Jurambilla.

Jurambilla stud principal Helen Raven said the champion ram was a "joy to be around".

"Hampshires are so placid, especially the rams," she said.

Ms Raven said the champion ewe, a "lovely little July-drop", had been champion and supreme Hampshire Down at the Goulburn Show.

The stud is made up of about 100 Hampshire Down ewes, including the hoggets, and had been operating since 2002.

"I saw a photo of a Hampshire Down and bought a ram to put with some ewes for crossbreds," she said.

"I was so impressed with the lambs, I bought Hampshire Downs and started breeding them."
