Simmental bull claims Urquhart Trophy in first interbreed win for producers

It was a State of Origin battle for the Urquhart Trophy supreme beef exhibit at the Sydney Royal Show on Monday (April 14), with the northern breeders coming out on top.
The Simmental bull, Elite Uproar, was exhibited by Glen Waldron and Kim Groner of Elite Cattle Company, Meandarra, Qld.
The bull, 16 months, by Elite Quittin' Time and from Elite Flirtin For Diamonds N111, weighed 756 kilograms with nine millimetre rump fat, 5mm rib, and 117 square centimetres eye muscle area.
Judge Gary Noller, Toowoomba, Qld, began with a lineup of 13 bulls, before calling forward the Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Red Angus, Santa Gertrudis, and Simmental.
Mr Noller praised the winning bull's structural correctness.
"I really admire his presence, his balance, I really like his underline - it's nice, neat and tidy," he said.
"Balance, to me, and structural correctness go hand-in-hand. That calf really displays a lot of balance.
"I really admire the amount of muscle that he has."
Ms Groner knew they would be up against strong competition.
"We hold the Sydney Royal Easter Show in very high esteem - we know full well there's people that travel from all over Australia to attend," she said.
"It's certainly one of the ones to win in Australia.
"It's actually our first time winning the interbreed here, we've been very, very fortunate and we've won at Beef, Ekka, and Melbourne prior to this.
"It's always been a bit of a goal and you never think you're going to get it but we're just absolutely over the moon to do it."
Ms Groner said his dam had won champion Simmental heifer at Sydney several years ago, while the bull's sire had won both grand champion bull and best exhibit three years ago.
He had competed at two local shows before heading to Sydney.
"His bloodlines, we knew already were pretty good. You never know if the exact cross is going to work but he's certainly been a standout since he was young," she said.
He would be used as an artificial insemination sire in their herd and offered in their September sale.
Elite Uproar claimed the Urquhart Trophy ahead of the supreme female, PC Miss Royal Roll T347, exhibited by Pine Creek Angus, Woodstock.
The cow was up against 13 other females before Mr Noller brought forward the Angus, Charolais, Limousin, Simmental, Shorthorn, Santa Gertrudis, and Murray Grey.
PC Miss Royal Roll, 30 months, was by PC Royal Roll R017 and out of PC Miss Great Northern 070.
Mr Noller noted her overall balance and correctness.
"I love her lines, I love that angle," he said.
"I think she's one of the better balanced females in the class."
