Binnowie Angus breaks stud record at third annual autumn sale

Binnowie Angus set new stud records at its annual Autumn bull sale, held on AuctionsPlus.
Of 21 offered, 12 sold to a top of $14,000 and a $7333 average, surpassing last year's top price by $2000 and setting a new stud record.
Binnowie Angus stud principal Will Watson, Coonalpyn, offered three more bulls in this year's sale due to the growth of their stud.
"This is our third Autumn sale as we are a reasonably new stud," he said.
"Our genetics are building and we are starting to get into that pointy end where we want to breed and our top buyer was looking for a Quixote son out of a different cow.
"The top bull had plenty of power and was a big muscly bull with plenty of capacity to him."
Lot 1, Binnowie Unafraid U27, topped the sale and was purchased by Thompsons & Sons, Bayview Shorthorn and Angus, Minlaton.
The 860-kilogram bull was sired by Millah Murrah Quixote Q96 and was a June 2023-drop, with estimated breeding values of 3.9 calving ease direct, -7.7 gestation length, 4.4 birth weight, a 115 400-day weight, 22 milk, and 3.6 scrotal size.
New buyer, Bayview Shorthorn and Angus stud principal Chris Thompson2, said he had seen videos of the bull and wanted him to back up their AI program.
"I liked the depth and the carcase shape the bull had, and I liked his moving ability," he said.
"I looked up his data, and he's very good on his calving ease and very good on his growth numbers, and that culminates in some very good data, as far as what we're looking for within our herd.
"It is also an outcross of genetics as our herd has been entirely based on Stoney Point bloodlines."
Volume buyers included Tim Saint, Field, who bought lot 6 and 11 at $7500 and $6000, while Elders Keith bought lots 4 and 18, both at $6000.
"We really appreciate our returning client's support," Mr Watson said.
"The remaining bulls are available for private selection."
Elders Tony Wetherall said it was only early days for Binnowie "who are developing their name and their type".
"But they're using very good genetics to get there and they're very passionate," he said.
"They've certainly got a bright future ahead of them in the Angus industry.
"The $14,000 stud record signifies the quality and genetics they're using."
The sale was held on AuctionsPlus in a helmsman style with Elders the supporting agent.
