Canberra Royal 2025: Square Meater breed judging

A Square Meater bull with a long list of ribbons continued his winning streak at the 2025 Royal Canberra Show taking out grand champion bull in the breed judging.
The long journey from Woodside in South Australia paid off for exhibitor Jess Paine, bringing the senior and grand champion bull Rosehill Scotch.
The 902 kilogram bull, sired by Oakvale Leroy Brown and out of Glenelva Lizzy, was three-years-old and claimed the title over the junior champion bull Rosehill Victory Served, also exhibited by Ms Paine.
Judge Geordie Elliot, GC Livestock Black Simmentals, Hamilton, Victoria, said it was his overall mass and depth of twist that put Scotch on top.
"He's a good bull that carries well, a big wide base and gets around well," he said.
Ms Paine said she had been showing Scotch since he was 10-months-old, including at Melbourne and Adelaide Royal shows where he had picked up champion and supreme ribbons.
"He is every farmers dream bull as his temperament is amazing," she said.
"He's very well put together, he's got the structure, he's got the carcase, and is a very easy calving bull.
"He's your ultimate bull."
Ms Paine said the grand champion bull was the perfect example of what she aimed to breed, running 30 breeders and six herd bulls.
The junior champion bull, Victory Served, was the full younger brother of Scotch.
The one-year-old bull, 413kg, was described by Mr Elliot to be a very structurally sound bull who moved freely around the ring.
