Ongoing support from loyal clients aided a strong 4th annual Angus bull sale at Newlyn Park stud in Meadows on Saturday.

The Newman family offered up 19 bulls, with 14 selling to $13,500, averaging $7750.

The result was slightly back on the 2024 sale, when 12 bulls sold under the hammer from 19 offered to $15,000, averaging $8083.

However, stud principal Gavin Newman was pleased with the result, considering the "woeful" year.

"We thought the top-end bulls were right up there genetically," he said.

"And we have been pretty happy with what we have produced out of ET cow Warrawee C251 Blackbird Q27 - we went out on a limb buying her from Qld, spending a bit of money on her, so it's pleasing that worked out."

Despite coming up lame with a broken toe tip that morning, the 2025 top-price bull at lot 4, NP Pellaton U07, still appealled for return clients Peter and Sarah Dawson, Dingabledinga, for low birthweight (+2.6) and calving ease direct (+6.5).

"We are looking to join heifers, so both the bulls we bought had it all covered," he said.

NP Pellaton U07 was sired by GAR Phoenix - a leading $Value index sire in Australia - and was out of Warrawee C251 Blackbird Q27, a cow imported from the US.

The March 2023-drop bull was also in the top 12 per cent for 400-day (+109) and top 3pc for eye muscle area at +13.4.

"He's as deep as the Mariana Trench, and has an EMA that butterflies up over the spine, very balanced and correct," Nutrien auctioneer Gordon Wood said.

The Dawsons also bought lot 3, NP Uppercut U10 - an ET brother to the top price bull - at $10,000, which also boasted good calving ease direct (+8.6) and low birthweight (+1.6).

It was also top 4pc for scrotal circumference (+4.3) and had an EMA of +10.7.

Fellow repeat client Steve Mlikota, Woodside, paid the sale's second highest price of $12,000 for NP Phoenix U04 - another ET brother in the catalogue of the top price bull.

It had moderate BW at +5.9, but boasted growth in the top 1-2pc of the breed (+72 200-day, +130 400-day and +160 600-day), plus top 10pc on carcase weight (+89).

Mr Mlikota bought a second bull, lot 7, NP Urban U32, at $7000, which also had a strong CWT at +87, calving ease direct (+6.8) and low BW at +1.5.

The biggest volume buyers on the day were return clients Sam and Doug Walters, Broadbent Ag, Macclesfield, who bought three bulls averaging $6166.

Sam said they were chasing figures to give their Newlyn Park-based herd a "bit more punch", including early growth weights and calving ease.

"We tend to offload at 320-330kg, we don't hold anything, so early growth rates is important," Doug said.

Broadbent Ag recently topped the Strathalbyn cattle market at 399c/kg for 16 March/April 2024-drop Newlyn Park-blood Angus weighing 291kg, equating to $1160.

The sale was conducted by Nutrien Strathalbyn, with Gordon Wood and Bradley Walker at the rostrum, and Andrew Wilson aiding online.
