Home-bred sire proves his worth at Glenellerslie Hereford bull sale

A home-bred sire has proven his worth at the 32nd Glenellerslie Hereford bull sale, Adelong, on Tuesday, February 11, siring the two equal top-priced bulls.
Glenellerslie Unorthodox was the sire of both Glenellerslie Xquiste and Glenellerslie Xtravaganza, which sold for the top price of $15,000.
The first bull to reach the top price was Glenellerslie Xtravaganza, purchased by Gordon Moon, Wulgulmerang, Vic.
The April-drop horned bull displayed a mature cow weight estimated breeding value (EBV) in the top three per cent of the breed with a figure of +107.
He also recorded above-average gestation length, 600-day weight and retail beef yield EBVs, with values of -1.7, +96 and +1.1, respectively.
He recorded rib and rump fat scans of 12 millimetres and 7mm, respectively, while weighing 834 kilograms and measuring a scrotal circumference of 41 centimetres.
Mr Moon said he has been purchasing from the stud for 20 years for his 350 Hereford cow breeding operation.
"I like a medium framed beast and we're in a marginal type of country, so the big cattle don't suit very well here," he said.
"We've been buying from Glenellerslie for a lot of years and they've been the most successful for us."
Mr Moon said he planned to join the new sire with a select line of females within the operation.
Glenellerslie Xquiste was the second equal top-priced bull, purchased by Tim Woodgate, Buchan, Vic.
He was also a horned April-drop bull and displayed growth, milk and carcase figures within the top 6pc while weighing 824kg and recording an eye muscle area of 100sq cm.
His 600-day weight, mature cow weight and carcase weight all ranked in the top 2pc with figures of +120, +111 and +83, respectively, while his 200-day weight figure of +48 was in the top 3pc, 400-day weight value of +77 was in the top 6pc and his milk EBV of +26 placed in the top 6pc.
In the polled portion, Glenellerslie Xalted was knocked down to R and M Trethowan, Cookadinia, near Wagga Wagga, for $11,000.
By Tycolah Southland Q010, the homozygous polled bull weighed 738kg, while recording an eye muscle area of 96sq cm and a rib and rump fat scan of 6mm.
He also recorded a milk EBV in the top 25pc with a value of +21.
Mr Trethowan also purchased Glenellerslie Xecutive, who was another Glenellerslie Unorthodox son, for $5000.
Gleenellerslie stud co-principal Blake Smith said there was strong support for loyal clients, with demand for the Glenellerslie Unorthodox and Kaludah Cooper sons.
"It hasn't been the best season," Mr Smith said.
"There were some clients that did turn up on the day, but couldn't buy a bull because they have too many and they are lasting a long time.
"Which is a good thing because they have longevity."
Overall, 15 of 32 bulls sold for an average of $7900.
The Helmsman auction was interfaced with AuctionsPlus and settled by Elders Tumut.
