Old Woombi Poll Dorset and Chain-O-Ponds Border Leicester capitalised on the re-stocking of the first cross ewes in the lamb market at their annual property sale on Tuesday.

The Walcha stud sold a combined 89 from 106 Border Leicester and Poll Dorset rams to average $1366.

In the breakdown, 53 from 70 Poll Dorset rams sold to a top of $2200 for an average of $1384, while all 36 Border Leicester rams cleared for an average of $1338 and a top of $1800.

More than 27 registered bidders were at the sale, with a heavy local presence from the New England region.

Results were up from last year's 17 from 38 Border Leicester rams selling to an $1270 average and 51 from 64 Poll Dorset rams, which averaged $1309.

Newly-elected Walcha councillor Hyde Thomson from Kanimbla Grazing Co, Walcha, purchased one of the two equal top-priced Poll Dorset rams for $2200, while Richard Hunt, Niangala, bought the other top-priced ram.

Top priced Border Leicester ram sold to Philip Carlon from Queenlee Pastoral, Uralla.

The Carlon family purchased 10 Border Leicester rams to average $1380.

Return buyer Yamburgan, Walcha, rounded out their sale draft with 10 Border Leicester rams.

Return buyers Merlin Grazing, Walcha and JW and CE Anderson, Armidale, both purchased eight Poll Dorset rams each.

The sale was covered by Elders Walcha with Scott Cooper the auctioneer.
