A rare opportunity to acquire some of Australia's oldest proven pedigree Angus genetics, will be offered for the first time at the Glengowan Angus Elite Female Sale.

It's a unique occasion for buyers to amass volume numbers of females with a lineage of bloodlines which have been painted in history, "sashed" in showrings and sustained through the generations of a stud and commercial breeding operation spanning 70 years.

Glengowan Angus are synonymous in the Central West region of NSW with the qualities of breeding consistency and longevity in their cattle.

The on-property sale will feature a leading draft of stud registered Angus cows and heifers, on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Glengowan Angus, stud co-principal Sandra Retallack said her family have been breeding cattle at Glengowan since the property was purchased by her family in 1858, with the stud established by her father, Stuart Gordon in 1957.

"There is a long history of family involvement and commitment to the cattle business at Glengowan.

The depth and quality of the females here are the result of careful selection over many decades.

For us it is all about longevity, consistency and integrity and it remains the cornerstone of everything we do" Mrs Retallack said.

The registered cow herd has been built over almost 70 years and there are many Sydney Royal Champions from Glengowan.

"We were lucky to inherit this unbelievably strong genetic foundation when we took over the stud from my father in 2004," she said.

"We have seen many fashion changes in the Angus breed, but we have always selected for fertility, ease of calving, weight and temperament.

"It is important to retain the classic attributes of Angus cattle like good structure, reliability, and while it is great to have impressive data, it needs to be backed up by the animals on offer, so we try to find a balance between the real performance in the herd and the paperwork".

The Glengowan cows have predominantly New Zealand genetics through their backgrounds so they are very soft, moderate cattle without anything extreme.

"Our cattle have incredibly strong constitutions and can handle a harsh environment like the Central West without any problems," Mrs Retallack said.

"The cows have great capacity like most New Zealand bred cattle and this brings ease of calving, and the ability to rear a good calf for many years," she said.

Genetics from most of the major New Zealand studs are represented in the backgrounds of the cows on offer in March, including Hingaia 959, an outstanding son of Hingaia 469.

In recent years Glengowan have introduced several new sire lines including Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15 and Millah Murrah Loch Up P15, as well as Cricklewood Pandemic, the $100,000 bull from the New Zealand sales in 2020.

A number of cows to be offered at the sale are pregnancy tested in calf to Tangihau Ultimate, the highest priced bull at the New Zealand 2024 sales, and Stern Black Rock, a strong performer from the South Island.

A large commercial Angus and Wagyu herd is also run at Glengowan. Mrs Retallack said that the advantage of this for the stud cattle was the ability to constantly monitor how the progeny of the stud cows and bulls perform in the marketplace.

Fertility and the ability to gain weight in all conditions are obviously key performance indicators and the bulls are selected accordingly.

Above all, Glengowan have remained committed to breeding practical cattle that work for a beef production business. The family's integrity has ensured that they have also remained custodians of the Angus breed.

"Our females have strength, capacity, docility, mothering skills and no calving problems - in other words, the same traits that saw Angus become the dominant breed in Australia."

The sale will be held on Thursday, March 13 at 1pm, on-property at Glengowan, 782 Moorilda Road, Newbridge, NSW.
