After the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 and floods in key growing areas, the industry is anticipating strong growth to resume, both domestically, which accounts for 85 per cent of production, and internationally.
Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, AMIA notes domestic consumption was experiencing strong growth, citing Nielsen ‘Harvest To Home’ data for the 52 weeks to March 22, 2020 indicating mango consumption increased by 11.8 per cent compared to the previous 52 weeks in terms of volume, and 7.1 per cent in terms of dollar sales.

For the percentage of households purchasing mangoes, the average amount spent per household and the average weight purchased per household all increased.

The industry has also developed new varieties. While the most common mango variety remains Kensington Pride (43 per cent of production volume), followed by Calypso (25 per cent), new varieties include R2E2 (19 per cent) and Honey Gold (eight per cent).

The next frontier for the mango industry is to grow exports, which accounted for around nine per cent of production volume in 2019-20.
According to AMIA’s new export strategy project (MG21000), launched in early 2022, the industry has shown consistent year-on-year export growth over the past decade, increasing export volumes by 62 per cent over the period.
