Why did that ram stand out?

The stud principal said the top-priced ram had a lovely, white wool with good shape and barrel. He said he was really happy with the overall result.

Who were the volume buyers?

Cressy House Estate, Longford, Tasmania, was one of the major volume buyers with 11 rams. The KD & G Fagg Family Trust, Rippleside, and an Edenhope operation each bought eight. Another buyer picked up four sires, and there were three sales of three rams.

What are those buyers breeding for?

The Edenhope buyer, a repeat client, described the rams as good doing, fertile and easily manageable, and plain and open rather than flytraps. The operation joins about 1200 to 1400 Merinos to Merinos each year and another 500 to Border Leicesters, breeding first-cross ewes as well as straight Merinos.

How are the genetics performing commercially?

The Edenhope buyer said all wether lambs go into the meat job and they are getting better hindquarters and more meat onto them. He also reported better wool with no colour in it, and said the sheep cut pretty well. He described the wether lambs in particular as good, meaty sheep.

Why are Tasmanian buyers seeking Victorian rams?

The selling agent said the business has a number of Tasmanian clients increasingly seeking Victorian rams. He said they are standing up well in the wet country down there, with feet structurally holding up really well, and that they are cutting well.

How did the season affect the sale?

The stud principal said it had been a good season compared with 2025. The selling agent noted the last couple of seasons had been difficult, with a lot of the ewe base sold off, which was the issue showing up in buyer numbers. He rated the genetics as very good and said these were the best rams the stud had displayed year on year, though there were fewer buyers, with new buyers taking two or three rams each.
