For the ninth quarter in a row, Tasmania has again led the rankings as the best-performing economy in Australia – further underlining its attractiveness as a place to buy businesses for sale.

According to the April 2022 CommSec ‘State of the States’ report, Tasmania ranked first on equipment investment, second on construction work done, retail spending and relative economic growth, and third on relative unemployment and dwelling starts.

The report uses the most recent economic data available; however, while some data relates to the December quarter, other data – such as unemployment - is timelier, covering the month of March.

In terms of overall economic activity Tasmania came in second spot, with output in the 2021 calendar year 26.4 per cent above the ‘normal’ level, just behind Western Australia at +36.1 per cent.

Equipment investment in the island state was up by 62.5 per cent in the December quarter compared with the decade average, ranking it first ahead of the ACT (+30.5 per cent) and South Australia (+14.4 per cent).

While Victoria led the way on retail spending, up 17.7 per cent in the December quarter from its decade-average levels, it just pipped Tasmania at +16.9 per cent.

Similarly, in terms of construction work done, South Australia (+24.9 per cent above its decade average in the December quarter) came in just ahead of Tasmania in second spot (+22.7 per cent).

The island state also ranked highly on dwelling starts (+2.4 per cent above the decade average in the December quarter), coming in third behind South Australia (+41.9 per cent) and the ACT (+26.7 per cent).

Tasmania also ranked third on home price growth (+24.5 per cent over the year to March 2022), just behind Queensland (+27.5 per cent) and South Australia (+25.2 per cent).

On the jobs measure, Western Australia had the strongest job market with an unemployment rate of 3.4 per cent in March 2022, 38.1 per cent below the decade average, followed by Queensland (34.5 per cent below the decade average) and Tasmania (29.6 per cent below the decade average.

Notably, wage growth in the year to the December quarter was strongest in Tasmania (+3 per cent), ahead of the ACT (+2.6 per cent), and NSW and Queensland (both +2.4 per cent).
