Renowned Horticulturist Offers Nursery For Sale VIC Bass Coast
Renowned arboriculture consultant, landscape designer and nurseryman Nicholas Rivett is looking to move on to a new challenge and, consequently, is offering his state-of-the-art nursery for sale at Glen Forbes on the picturesque Bass Coast in south-east Victoria.

Nicholas has been involved in horticulture and landscape design since 1969. In that time, he has established and sold three nurseries and won a national Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) award for his five-level sky park and garden built for the Upper West Side residential development on the corner of Lonsdale and Spencer streets in the Melbourne CBD. The garden contains some 232 species of plants, including trees of up to 35 years of age.
Situated just over an hour from the Melbourne CBD in the quiet hamlet of Glen Forbes, he established Rivett’s Advanced Tree Nursery in 2002 on the 31.43-hectare greenfield site, which includes the 28.23-hectare farm, 3.2 hectares on a 99-year lease (commenced on October 1, 1994), and 4.5 hectares of Bass River frontage on a rolling five-year lease.

The property now has six nursery growing areas and a split propagation area operating across some 11 hectares of fully developed infrastructure, producing approximately 10,000 trees per year.
The nursery has two profit centres: propagating premium quality native and exotic stock using air root pruning ‘RocketPockets’ to ensure a healthy root system; and producing advanced natives and exotics using ‘JETbags’ and ‘JETwrap’ air root pruning containers to create a “naturally perfect root system”.

The business supplies three client types: large production nurseries for which special large-volume lines are produced under contract on an annual basis; plant brokers, specialist nurseries, architects, landscape architects and the landscape trade to which large trees from 20 to 2,000 litres are supplied; and retail nurseries which purchase smaller trees from 12 to 100 litres.
Propagation is undertaken in two 30m x 12m polyhouse structures complete with trellises, flood and drain production tables, outside flood and drain bed table area, and an electronic- and computer-controlled irrigation system managed by three on-site weather stations.

Water is in plentiful supply, with a bore delivering to a 250,000-litre tank and on to water treatment plants which irrigate the nursery by two variable-speed drive model pumps. Multiple water emitters are installed at each pot location.
Water licences include 60.4 megalitres of ground water and 40 megalitres of surface water held in a 45-megalitre dam, with all nursery drainage water captured for use in a five-megalitre dam. The property also includes approximately 40,000 litres of potable water storage and associated reticulation systems.

Totally off-grid, the nursery is serviced by a new solar power system comprising 51.48kw of north-facing 30-degree solar arrays and 45.4kw of battery storage. A shed contains battery and electronics, VSD pumps and auto-start 25KVA generator.
What’s more, the entire property is covered by a wi-fi network used for stock management and updating irrigation and in-field systems connected by Weather Underground, a commercial weather service providing real-time weather information over the Internet. Fenced into five paddocks featuring modern yards, cattle crush and loading ramp, the property also turns off some 20 calves and up to 30 head just fattening.

Rivett’s Advanced Tree Nursery also includes a large machinery/workshop with staff amenities, kitchen and toilet, mezzanine storage and pallet shelving; a 20m x 13m machinery and equipment shelter; a fully equipped workshop including welders, plasma cutter, press brake, sheet metal guillotine, and work benches; and a fully serviced office in a converted 40-foot container.
With views to Bass Hill, the holding boasts a renovated home featuring four bedrooms with walk-in robes, and two bathrooms, including ensuite in the master. Built in 2000, the residence offers a large office/fourth bedroom, new open-plan kitchen with butler’s pantry, and reading room/library connecting to the living room featuring slow-combustion wood fireplace. Outside is a 20-square-metre veranda garden.

For a new owner, Rivett’s Advanced Tree Nursery offers plenty of scope for expansion. The nursery is currently run by Nicholas and wife Alison and a newly appointed production manager. The business employs seasonal contract staff when required.
The property is being offered for sale either as a going concern, including the business, assets, machinery, tools, raw materials, and all unallocated and contract stock, on in parts.
