Featuring flat to slightly undulating country underpinned by a mix of dark red, black and red soils, the property includes around 6,885 hectares (17,013 acres) of cleared cultivation country, with some 2,400 hectares planted to fodder crops, hay and grain production. Cotton has also been trialled in the area.

The balance of ‘Banjo’ is covered with light to medium timber (including Whitewood, Ghost Gum, Bloodwood, Cabbage Gum, Ironwood, Darwin Box and Coolabah) and natural grasses (including Golden Beard, Curly Blue, Plume Sorghum, Ribbon and numerous others).

The current plan for the cleared land is to use an area of around 3,200 hectares that surrounds the homestead compound for production of hay, silage, standing fodder crops and grain. This mixture of products is designed to support the value-adding of young cattle, both own-bred and purchased, during the dry season (April to November) to maximise production of the highest value live export cattle.

The intention for the other cleared areas is to grow improved pasture grasses which can be grazed from surrounding paddocks. This will facilitate an increase in carrying capacity and fertility rates over time by providing better nutrition and controlled joining.

Currently, the property’s carrying capacity, excluding the cleared cultivation land, is estimated to be 4,000 breeding cows and followers, in-line with the Sturt Plateau benchmark of around eight breeders per square kilometre.
