Mango Farms For Sale Offer Investment Upside On Positive Growth Projections

Continued Domestic And International Growth Forecast To Drive Industry

The Australian mango industry is forecasting a resumption of growth post-COVID-19, underpinned by an increased availability of product across an extended season, increased engagement by major retail channels in merchandising, and improved consistency in product quality.

According to peak industry body Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA), production volume – 96 per cent of which comes from Queensland and the Northern Territory – increased by 25.9 per cent to 72,022 tonnes from 2012-13 to 2019-20, while production value rose by 26.7 per cent to a farmgate value of $185 million in the period.

After the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 and floods in key growing areas, the industry is anticipating strong growth to resume, both domestically, which accounts for 85 per cent of production, and internationally.

Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, AMIA notes domestic consumption was experiencing strong growth, with citing Nielsen ‘Harvest To Home’ data for the 52 weeks to March 22, 2020 indicating mango consumption increased by 11.8 per cent compared to the previous 52 weeks in terms of volume, and 7.1 per cent in terms of dollar sales.

For the percentage of households purchasing mangoes, the average amount spent per household and the average weight purchased per household all increased.

In anticipation of continued growth, the industry is investing significantly to increase capabilities and foster a culture of innovation, with the levy-funded Hort Innovation Project aiming to assist growers with on-farm maturity testing, export development and crop protection.

To this end, in recent years the mango season has been extended from the summer months of November through to January to cover more than half the year, with mangoes available in commercial quantities as early as July and as late as March.

The industry has also developed new varieties. While the most common mango variety remains Kensington Pride (43 per cent of production volume), followed by Calypso (25 per cent), new varieties include R2E2 (19 per cent) and Honey Gold (eight per cent).

The next frontier for the mango industry is to grow exports, which accounted for around nine per cent of production volume in 2019-20.

According to AMIA’s new export strategy project (MG21000), launched in early 2022, the industry has shown consistent year-on-year export growth over the past decade, increasing export volumes by 62 per cent over the period.

Currently the industry exports primarily to Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, UAE and the US, where Australian mangoes are positioned as a premium product with unique varieties and flavour profiles that provide counter-seasonal supply to the northern hemisphere.

The industry has an ambitious goal to increase the share of production exported from 9 per cent in 2019-20 to 20 per cent over the next five years by capitalising on Australia’s reputation for high-quality product and growing global demand for healthy, quality products such as mangoes, with a particular focus on Japan, the US, India, the Netherlands and China.
