While recent severe weather and flooding in the key growing regions of New South Wales (NSW) and South East Queensland have cut this year’s predicted crop by 10 per cent, the Australian Macadamia Society’s (AMS) revised forecast of 49,340 tonnes in-shell, down from the original figure of 54,930 tonnes, is not far off 2021’s record 51,500 tonnes – and well up on the 35,200 tonnes produced back in 2013.

And strong growth is expected to continue, with the Australian Macadamia Society CEO Jolyon Burnett recently predicting the industry will produce 70,000 tonnes by 2030.

A recognised global market leader, the Australian industry is the world’s leading supplier of macadamia kernel and the largest producer overall, responsible for 30 per cent of global supply, according to the AMS. South Africa, Kenya and Hawaii are the other major producers.

Today, there are more than 700 growers across three states, producing around 50,000 tonnes per year, with 70 per cent of the crop exported to more than 40 countries. Key export markets include Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Europe and North America, but the biggest market is Australia itself.

The industry is now worth more than $280 million annually, employs thousands of people and contributes millions of dollars to regional economies.
