Heritage-Listed Tasmanian Beauty 'Bentley' Enters the Market

One of Tasmania's finest agricultural properties is now available for purchase

Comprising a carefully restored 1879 dwelling, some 395 hectares of some of Tasmania's most fertile farmland, and plenty of guest accommodation — all located just 65 km from Launceston — "Bentley" is a farming property with flare.

Rob Dixon of Knight Frank Agri-Business describes “Bentley” as "one of Tasmania’s finest heritage restorations, situated on some of  Northern Tasmania’s more fertile agricultural land in the Meander Region. With untapped water opportunities and one of our most reliable rainfalls, this region is now being recognised for its farming attributes."

The majestic homestead at "Bentley"

The property has a long and rich history. Its land grant dates back to 1829, when Tasmania was still called Van Diemen's Land, and many successive generations of skilled farmers have called "Bentley" home since then.

Because of its historical residence and outbuildings, "Bentley" has been featured in publications relating to historical Australian properties, including Dr. Holly Kerr Forsyth’s book Gardens of Eden. Of the property, Forsyth had only the most complimentary things to say, writing:

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Impeccable decor in the main residence of "Bentley"

The heritage-listed main residence is a sight to behold. It is set between three large lakes, and surrounded by a beautifully-maintained garden that forms an oasis of green.

The homestead is approximately 860 sqm in size and boasts a dining room, drawing room, morning room, billiard room, two libraries, a conservatory, a kitchen, and potential for six bedrooms and bathrooms. It also features an additional 75sqm of garage/carport space and verandahs.

Ornate details in the "Bentley" main residence

Outside, the estate buildings include a three-bay carriage house, a stable, a stainless steel orangery, and two fully-restored staff cottages, each with three bedrooms. All are fully restored and in outstanding condition.

The exquisite outbuildings at "Bentley"

With its location in the Northern Tasmania's fertile Chudleigh Valley, much of this property's 395 hectares is in land capability classes 4 and 5, making it an outstanding agricultural asset. "Bentley" is already set up for farming, with barns, cattle yards, and three water catchments set up to take full advantage of the 48 inches of rain that falls annually in the region.

For the past 20 years it has been developed as a cattle grazing enterprise, although Dixon notes that it could also be used for cropping.

The property's pristine grounds

In addition to its function as a farming property, "Bentley" could also work as a B&B or wedding venue. Dixon says, "The property currently provides a very private and secluded offering, which buyers are appreciating."
