Historic School On The River
A piece of local history is set to go under the hammer next month with the sale of the old schoolhouse at Bungawalbin Junction.
Located on the elbow of the Richmond River and Bungawalbin Creek, between Coraki and Woodburn, the brick building would make an ideal restoration project.
Built in 1892, at a cost of 432 pounds, many of its features are still intact, including the school bag racks and old chalkboards. It has sat vacant for many years and is crying out for some TLC, and looking for someone to go in and restore it to its original status.
The schoolhouse is set on a large 5000 sqm riverside block, with a building entitlement and power available, meaning there is plenty of scope for someone to build a home, and restore the schoolhouse as a side project. Although the current building dates to 1892, the history of the school dates back all the way to 1877, according to the Coraki Historical Society publication, Looking Back at Bungy – a Brief History of the Bungawalbyn District. That’s when residents built the first school - a slab hut for 26 local children aged from 4 to 15, very few of whom ‘had ever been under instruction’.
The slab hut was later replaced by a weatherboard building erected by the Department of Education, before the current school house was built.
The adjoining property to the schoolhouse - a 5477 sq m block with a three bedroom home will be auctioned separately on on site Saturday 13th June 2020 at 12 pm.
