A Glimpse into the History of Woodbine Estate:
Woodbine Estate was first settled by Mr. and Mrs. Bandy, who arrived from England in the 1800s. Like many pioneers of their time, they chose only the most fertile and resourceful land on which to build a self-sufficient life and Woodbine stands as a prime example of that era's ambition and endurance. Just nearby, another landmark of local history, Regan's Ford (now the site of the Windmill Roadhouse on Brand Highway) tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Regan, who also made their home along the Moore River. These early settlers shaped the region with their hard work, resilience and community spirit.
Adding to Woodbine's charm is its fascinating link to the ship "Seabird" which ran aground at Wedge Island in the 1800s. It is said that some of the aged timber used in the construction of the cottage was salvaged from the ship's cargo, collected along Ledge Point beach and carted inland along the old coastal track to the Bandy's new homestead. The Bandy family raised twelve children at Woodbine Estate, contributing enormously to the development of the Moore River district. Local folklore tells of spirited moments, like Mrs. Bandy's frustration when Mr. Regan's pigs raided her precious vegetable garden a reminder of how hard won every crop and meal was in those days. Perhaps the most remarkable story of all is that of Mrs. Bandy's 73-mile ride from Woodbine to Guildford, cradling her sick infant son, Joseph in a basket across her saddle. Against all odds, the journey saved his life and Joseph went on to live into his nineties in Gingin, remembered fondly as a true gentleman and testament to his mother's courage. Today, Woodbine Estate stands as a beautifully maintained by the Miller family and a fully renovated example of Western Australia's pioneering heritage a home that offers not just comfort and beauty, but a direct link to the past.
