Lifestyle
The Oast House was built around the end of the 1800s and was used to dry the hops which were grown on the farm for many decades.
A beautiful and considered conversion of the hop kiln into a residence was completed in 2010, blending the old with the new to create one of Tasmania's most stunningly unique homes. Nestled in the Derwent Valley, only 25 minutes from Hobart and 10 minutes from MONA, the Oast House offers an idyllic lifestyle, with multiple accommodation/and or business options. The property boasts southerly views towards Mt. Wellington and northwestern views towards Mt. Field. (20-minute drive).
Sorell Creek (which is home to Platypus and fish) and magnificent sandstone cliffs create a stunning backdrop on the Western side of the property.
During its operation, 16 hop pickers huts were built and utilised to house the families of the seasonal workers. One of the huts has since been converted to include a fully self-contained one-bedroom cottage, an artist's studio, and a gorgeous greenhouse. There are still families in the locality who remember coming to pick hops in the Summer here.
A number of original features were retained during the conversion including:-
• the original (large) fan - used to dry the hops
• Pay master's office
• The now Entrance hall (which was previously used as stables) retains many of its original features with timber-lined walls, original posts, beams, and pegs for the bridles
• The original ladder used to reach the second floor remains as an option to reach the master bedroom from the living room
• Some Sandstone foundations
• The original hardwood beams, floorboards and roof trusses, etc have been restored and left exposed to create a unifying and aesthetically pleasing structure throughout the building
• Hop huts
Other:-
• The Oast house foundations have been recently underpinned with large concrete slabs which provides a strong base for the structure
• The roof is also only 15 years old
• Most of the weatherboards have been replaced during the conversion however some original boards have been kept as a feature
• Recently painted
