"Rocklea" Holstein & Jersey Dairy Farm - Atherton Tablelands
"ROCKLEA" Holstein & Jersey Dairy Farm - Atherton Tablelands.
This 273-acre property which has been family owned since 1931 is situated only 1.5km from the rural township of Millaa Millaa, in the clean green food bowl that is the Atherton Tablelands in tropical North Queensland. The region is highly regarded climatically due to its location in the hinterland area behind Cairns and its height above sea level provides a much more liveable environment in terms of temperature and humidity. Scenically this region is second to none in Australia and it is all within approx. 1.5 hours from Cairns.
The undulating country rises to some steeper ridge area and is mainly fertile red volcanic soil with some river loams along river and creek frontages. The property is fenced into 18 main and 10 smaller paddocks and is connected by over 2 kms of concrete laneways. Fencing is in good condition throughout the property. Paddocks are all well-established stands of mainly Nandi Setaria and Creeping Vigna with areas of Couch, Kikuyu and Pinto Peanut. A solid pasture management program is in place.
This area is renowned for its abundant and reliable rainfall and averages 2000 to 2500 mm annually. This is underpinned by double frontage to the permanent North Beatrice River and smaller creeks and a spring fed dam at the head of one of these creeks. There is a water licence for 252 megs from the river which feeds to 45 acres of solid set irrigation and also pumps up to a header tank on an adjacent ridge (230 feet lift) and which then gravitates back to the dairy.
A solar mono pump is in the process of installation at the dam to enable transfer of water to more troughs higher up on the block. Twenty-six troughs close to the dairy are all gravity fed from the header tank.
The milking shed has a fourteen (14) a side midline herringbone dairy with Davies Way air operated stall gates, twenty-eight (28) individual grain feeders on auger system and individual molasses feeding is pumped to the dairy.
Milking machines are Westfallia with ultralight IQ Clusters with silicone liners. Two (2) QBB Bulk Vats - 4,800 litre storage with new condenser units replaced in the last two years. There is a 25kva back-up tractor operated generator. Other buildings include a cotton seed feed shed, calf shed, workshop, machinery shed and a cattle handling shed including crush.
The main homestead which is 4 bedrooms, ensuite, main bathroom and office is constructed of brick veneer and was built in 1981. The second home on the property is the original homestead and is constructed of rendered block and weatherboard.
The vendors are currently milking 130 head with total cattle numbers at present sitting at 277. They have been involved with Official Herd Recording for over 30 years and have a Herd Health Program with Tableland Veterinary Service which commenced in 1980. There is a full plant & equipment list available.
