In the early 1980's the Freckleton family settled on Karrawirra. What appealed to them from day one was the majestic red gums scattered across the attractive undulating landscape. During the period 1990 to 2020, a number of corporate wine companies developed and planted approximately 2,700 acres of wine grapes throughout the neighbouring Joanna/Koppamurra region. The wine makers of these companies embraced the region with the same enthusiasm as the Freckleton family did a decade earlier. Collectively, their faith in this region has been rewarded.
Karrawirra is located 21 kilometres from Naracoorte, 18 kilometres of the journey on a bitumen road. The property features a character homestead, with modern renovations that enhance the original features, all set in an attractive and vibrant garden. The diverse attributes of the property have seen success in prime lamb and viticulture enterprises, all backed up with a secure water allocation of 108.9 megalitres.
The land at Karrawirra is slightly undulating consisting of soils of grey clay loams on the flats, some red sandy loams to sandy loams on the rises. Pockets of soils would fit the description of the Wrattonbully wine region's famous free-draining terra rossa soils, which are ideal soils for viticulture. Pastures are predominantly Mt Barker sub clover, native clovers and rye grass throughout the property. Tree species on the property are Red Gum, Manna Gum, Hill Gum and Stringy Bark.
Karrawirra is located in the designated Geographical Indication (GI) of the 'Wrattonbully Wine Region'. The Karrawirra Vineyard has the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (10.37ac) and Chardonnay (6.17ac) and Cave Ridge Vineyard has Cabernet Sauvignon (4.3ac) and Malbec (6.12ac).
